Student Self-Service Laptop Loan Unit Success

As part of our commitment to innovation and the DCU student experience, ISS in conjunction with the Library and Quality Promotion Office launched the Student Self-Service Laptop Loan scheme on the ground floor of the library in October of 2013.Self-Service Laptop Loan Unit

This unit allows students to take a loan of one of the 24 Dell laptops on offer for use in the library for 3 hours per time. This scheme is of huge benefit to students that don't own a laptop or do not have theirs on campus with them.

As the unit is self-service using their student card, students are able to complete the transaction without the involvement of a member of staff. They simply scan their student card to log-in and complete the transaction to take a loan of a laptop and do the same to return it.

DCU was the first organisation in Ireland to introduce a self-service laptop loan unit and this was done through Lapsafe.

This scheme has been hugely popular with students over the academic year from October 2013 to May 2014 as the following figures demonstrate;

  • Number of times laptops loaned - over 9000
  • Over 4500 loans per semester
  • Average loans per month - 1500
  • Hours of laptop use - over 23,000
  • Individual laptop loan per month - between 60 & 70 times
