ISS wish to advise that we will be conducting necessary scheduled maintenance on the campus Virtual Private Network (VPN) service this coming Friday December 14th at 10am.

The maintenance will cause disruption to the service for approximately 2 hours.

Problems with Vodafone 3G coverage on campus

Some Vodafone users may be experiencing problems with Vodafone coverage on parts of the campus at the moment.
The problem is with a Vodafone mast and is affecting the 3G service.

ISS have reported this to Vodafone and they are currently working on it, but they have said that it could be up to 3 more days before it is corrected.

In the meantime, as this fault appears to be with the 3G service, you may be able to get coverage if you change your phone settings to GSM (ie switch off 3G).

Disruption to Telephone Services on campus this weekend, 15-16th September

ISS would like to inform you of some disruptions to the Telephone Services which will take place this weekend, 15-16th September.

This will take place during the following times:

approx. 1 hour between the hours of 08:30 and 10:30 on Saturday 15th morning
approx. 1 hour between the times of 10:00 and 13:00 on Sunday 16th morning.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is necessary for some essential maintenance.

Problems sending email to some external addresses

Email to addresses is now being accepted from DCU addresses again. It should now be possible to send or forward email to this domain without issue.

Sending Other External Email 
We have resolved most of the issues relating to other external addresses and will continue to work on this.

If you continue to experience problems sending email please let us know.

## Original Message ##

A compromised DCU email account has been used over the weekend to send spam emails.
We have now disabled the compromised email account and associated PC.
However, this activity over the weekend has resulted in some email issues which we are working to resolve.

Internal Email
All email sent between DCU addresses and linked colleges is functioning as normal.

Receiving External Email
All email sent to DCU addresses and the linked colleges from the outside world will arrive as normal.

Sending External Email
Due to the weekend spam activity our mail server has been placed on some spam reject lists.
You may notice this problem if you are sending email to some non-DCU (extnernal) email addresses from your DCU account. In this case you would receive a notification (bounce) email after attempting to send a message to a problem address. The bounce email may mention:
  • Unable to send message, message undelivered
  • RBL, reject list, black list
  • IP address
This is stating that your message has not been deliveredYou will receive one bounce message for every non-delivered email sent. Each bounce message only relates to a particular email. The relevant message(s) will need to be sent again once these issues are resolved. 

If you have sent external email and NOT received a bounce message as described above your email messages have been delivered.

Forwarding Email
DCU email accounts which are currently forwarding emails to a problem address will also experience this problem. In this case forwarded emails will not be delivered to the external email account. In the short term we recommend you to stop forwarding your DCU email externally (if you have noticed this issue). Please read email in your DCU account until further notice if your DCU emails are not forwarding correctly.

Which External Addresses Do Not Work ?
This problem will not apply to all external email. Only email to certain addresses will experience this issue. We do not have a comprehensive list of problem addresses but is one of the addresses currently not accepting DCU email.

When Will This Problem Be Resolved ?
We are working to resovle this issue as quickly as possible. We will send further updates on our service updates page ( today on progress. However, it may take some time to fully resolve this issue.

2012/2013 Moodle rollout

ISS plans to roll moodle courses forward next week in preparation for the new academic year.
Please note the dates and times below as some downtime for the moodle system is required.

Wednesday August 29th
8am: 2011/2012 moodle ( will become unavailable.
11am: 2011/2012 moodle will become available again at this new location:

Monday September 3rd
3pm: The new 2012/2013 moodle ( will become available.

All 2011/2012 user data will be deleted (e.g. forum posts, choices, chats, assignments uploads)
Course content will be carried forward from 2011/2012 and hidden from students' view
You should make course content visible again as you need for the new academic year
Wiki histories should be manually deleted if your module contained wikis

Friday September 28th
5pm: 2011/2012 moodle ( will be locked so there can be no further updates.

Access after this time will be read only.

We apologise if this downtime will cause you any inconvenience.
